Software development is a competitive and fast-paced industry in which new tools and technologies emerge all the time. Developers are always looking for a better, faster, and more secure way to build web and mobile apps, or the latest tech that will disrupt or transform yet another industry. One way to feel out the next trends in the industry is to ask the developers themselves—what they are working on, what tools they use, and what they want to learn.

The newly released SlashData’s 2022 State of the Developer Nation by Slashdata does just that. The survey of over 20,000 programmers reveals the following about the hottest topics in software development right now.

Cryptocurrencies

Thirty-four percent of participants reported that they were actively learning about cryptocurrencies, with almost half of these currently involved in crypto-related projects. Despite the famously volatile market, cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum are seeing increased adoption, and new projects continue to emerge.

NFTs

Non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, recently became a huge money-making phenomenon in the form of digital art and collectibles. Almost a third of coders are interested in developing their NFT expertise, with 11% actively working on NFT projects.

Blockchain

Blockchain is the basis of the previously mentioned technologies but is much more than just digital assets. Blockchain has applications in security, fintech, supply chain, medicine, and more. Around 30% of developers are learning about blockchain, with 11% actively engaged in blockchain activity.

Metaverse and AI

Twenty-eight percent of programmers surveyed are learning about the metaverse and AI. Both are emerging technologies that have wide applications and backing from the tech giants, such as Meta and Google.

Virtual and Augmented Reality

Rust (the coding language) almost tripled its userbase over the last two years thanks to its popularity in AR/VR development. These technologies demand performance and stability, which Rust is suited to.
